A place with a past. A future worth imagining.

In Sheffield, historic industrial buildings are part of the city's character. Silver Works begins with the belief that places carrying that history deserve a considered future.

The building

The Silver Works project centres on the historic Lion Works complex in the Burngreave and Spital Hill area. The Grade II listed site reflects the architectural and industrial character of its surroundings. Years of vacancy and historic damage have left the building facing considerable challenges, making its conservation and reuse an important and demanding undertaking.

Why it matters

Restoring a historic site is about more than preserving its appearance. It can protect a connection to the past, strengthen the identity of a neighbourhood and create a new purpose for a building that has been out of use for many years.

Looking ahead

Silver Works is exploring how the site could support a broader social purpose. Early concepts consider a combination of supported accommodation and community-facing activity, with the building's historic fabric and the needs of future users informing the design process.

From working site to renewal.

  1. Industrial past

A working site within the industrial fabric of Burngreave and Spital Hill. Dates and former uses will be published once verified against approved records.

  2. Prolonged vacancy

Years out of use, with historic fire damage and structural vulnerability that make conservation a demanding undertaking.

  3. Feasibility and engagement

The current stage. Investigating the building, testing ideas and beginning conversations with the people and organisations who could shape its future.

  4. Possible renewal

A carefully restored building, brought back into meaningful use. Subject to design, consultation, approvals and delivery arrangements.

Historic dates, former uses and restoration achievements are not stated here until confirmed against approved sources.
